Rosh Hashanah with Rapoport’s Restaurant Group

rosh-hashanah

The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, takes place this year starting after sundown on Sunday, September 25th and goes through sundown on Tuesday, September 27th. As with many Jewish holidays, food is always a big focal point, and many of the traditional dishes served hold a special meaning. I have always been a big fan of Rosh Hashanah dinner and have a lot of fond memories from my childhood, spending these nights with family, feeling very full — but very satisfied — by the end of the meal.

While some of you may love the thrill of spending the day (or multiple days) in the kitchen cooking for this celebratory holiday, I’m sure there are plenty of you who prefer someone else do the cooking — and cleaning — for you and your family. That’s where Rapoport’s Restaurant Group comes to the rescue!

Rosh Hashanah menus will be available for dine-in at Burt & Max’s in the Delray Marketplace and at Max’s Grille in Mizner Park. These special a la carte menus will be offered on Sunday, September 25th and Monday, September 26th after 5pm.

The menus offered feature some of the most common and symbolic foods served during Rosh Hashanah.

One of the most iconic ingredient duo to eat during this holiday is apples and honey. This symbolizes the idea of being blessed with a sweet new year. Both restaurants will have an apples and honey salad with Granny Smith apples, toasted walnuts, arugula and radicchio, tossed in a cider-honey dressing.

Another very commonly served dish at Rosh Hashanah dinner, and actually at a lot of Jewish holidays, is matzo ball soup. These are basically dumplings made of seasoned matzo meal, egg and chicken fat. Matzo meal is used to represent the unleavened bread that the Jewish people ate during their exodus from Egypt, so this soup is basically a reminder of past hardships and symbolizes how far we have come.

For the main courses, Burt & Max’s and Max’s Grille will offer three options: roasted chicken, slow-roasted brisket, and pan-seared salmon.

Brisket has always been the go-to for my family, and has become a very traditional thing to serve during Rosh Hashanah dinner. I’m not really sure why, and I don’t think there is any religious connection. Regardless of the why, it’s delicious!

One thing to note, however, is that this preparation of brisket it nothing like the seasoned-and-smoked BBQ style. “Jewish brisket” is braised and usually served as a one-pot-meal with things like potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, onions, prunes, etc. It’s cooked low and slow, long enough for the meat to just melt in your mouth. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

For dessert, Burt & Max’s brings back the symbolic apples, offering a warm apple-cranberry strudel with vanilla ice cream and caramel. Max’s Grille will offer coconut-almond macaroons, which is a traditional Jewish cookie made from shredded coconut, egg whites and sugar.
