Miss Crispy Rice: Miami Sushi Hotspot

Miss Crispy Rice is the answer to your search for Miami sushi with unique offerings and a vibey atmosphere. We’ve all heard of sushi bars, but the Japanese restaurant, Miss Crispy Rice, is the first-ever crispy rice and hand roll bar in Miami.

Located within Oasis Wynwood — essentially an open-air food hall — Miss Crispy Rice shares a building with Poke OG and Oise Ristorante. All three restaurants are part of the Miami restaurant group, OG Hospitality.

The crispy rice trend has taken over in recent years, and I am here for it. I absolutely love that crispy, crunchy block of rice, and the topping options are endless! I also am a huge fan of hand rolls. Probably because it’s kind of like a mini sushi roll you don’t have to share.

This is not your average Miami sushi restaurant. The menu is largely filled with — not surprisingly — a variety of hand rolls and crispy rice. There is also crudo and an izakaya menu with dumplings, nigiri, soup, and other small plates great for sharing. Pair these delicious bites with one of the many bottles of sake available, beer or wine.

I had such a great time at Miss Crispy Rice! I credit a lot of this to the hospitality from co-founder, Andrew Mayer. When we walked through the door, there was not even a moment of hesitation before he greeted us and made us feel right at home as we waited for what would become one of my top omakase experiences…

The Best Miami Sushi Omakase Experience

The literal translation of omakase is “I leave the details up to you.” This Japanese style of dining features a chef-curated menu enjoyed at sushi counter seating where you can watch the sushi chef(s) create every plate right in front of you. Seating is often very limited for these types of sushi restaurants, to maintain the quality of both the food and the interactive experience.

Miss Crispy Rice offers a 14-course omakase for $87, and a 16-course for $125. The menu includes a little bit of everything: dumplings, crudo, nigiri, soup, and of course, hand rolls and crispy rice. Accommodations can be made for dietary restrictions such as shellfish, gluten, and kosher lifestyles, with no problem. Just be sure to make a note of this when you make your reservation!

Those prices are already pretty reasonable for an omakase, but wait ’til you hear what the Miami Spice deals are.

During Miami Spice Restaurant Months, Miss Crispy Rice is offering a 10-course omakase lunch experience for $35; and a 13-course omakase dinner experience for $60, both available Thursday through Tuesday. These prices do not include beverages, tax, or gratuity.

This is a steal for Miami sushi! Not only are these unbeatable prices, but there is a lot of food — you won’t leave hungry. Here’s what’s included in the Miami Spice omakase lunch and dinner:

Lunch ($35):

  • Dumplings
  • Crudo
  • Chef’s selection crispy rice
  • Chef’s selection crispy rice
  • Chef’s selection crispy rice
  • Chef’s selection nigiri
  • Chef’s selection nigiri
  • Chef’s selection handroll
  • Homemade miso soup
  • Dessert of the day

Dinner ($60):

  • Gyoza en brodo
  • Salmon crudo in a ponzu ginger glaze
  • Hamachi crudo with blood orange segments and Fresno chilies
  • Crispy rice topped with bluefin tuna
  • Crispy rice topped with unagi
  • Crispy rice layered with scallop and uni
  • Ruby snapper nigiri
  • Torched salmon belly nigiri
  • Chef’s selection nigiri
  • Chef’s selection handroll
  • Donburi bowl featuring skirt steak or unagi
  • Homemade miso soup
  • Dessert of the day

Everything was so fresh and flavorful, and I loved the amount of creativity put into the courses. The staff was right on top of it when it came to providing gluten-free alternatives. For example, instead of the donburi bowl (a rice bowl dish), I got salmon poke with sweet onion and scallion. It was served tableside, spooned into a sizzling hot mini cast iron pan. This was one of my favorites of the night!

Dessert was also super interesting: Kakigori. This is a Japanese dessert with shaved ice. Miss Crispy Rice’s version of this had pistachio gelato and salted yuzu whipped cream topped with dark cherry shaved ice — and sprinkles! For me, the shaved ice was served solo without any of the dairy. It was really tasty and not too sweet!

I’ve done a handful of omakase dinners throughout South Florida, and this one is up there as one of my personal favorites. And definitely one of my favorite Miami sushi experiences overall.

Typically, a hand roll is served toward the end of an omakase — but crispy rice is never part of the menu! I love the way Miss Crispy Rice seamlessly intertwines this modern sushi trend into the tradition of omakase. For creative and delicious sushi in Miami, I’d highly recommend Miss Crispy Rice.

There is a lot of sushi Miami has to offer, but there is something about this place that sets it apart from some of the other best sushi restaurants in Miami. The atmosphere is fun and vibrant, the staff is attentive and friendly, and the prices are great, especially during Miami Spice restaurant months!
