Small Place, Big Taste: Flakowitz, a Local Boca Favorite

There are a lot of lavish dining establishments in Boca, that’s for sure, but there are also a lot of smaller local favorites that should not be passed by. One of these great spots is Flakowitz Deli on Federal Hwy., across from the Fifth Avenue Shops. If you’re looking for a good place to go for breakfast or lunch, this is the place to go. There is also a location in Boyton Beach that was featured on Guy Fieri’s Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. But back to the amazing breakfast I recently had at Flakowitz…

The morning before my family flew back to Jersey, we wanted to grab breakfast before they headed off to the airport. It was packed when we got there around 10:30 in the morning. The smell of French toast, eggs, and coffee filled the air and had our mouths watering. Huge muffins, cookies and cakes lined the wall by the front counter, and the daily specials were written on a big chalkboard right by the door. Though we were there for breakfast, I found myself itching to come back for lunch another day to try their sandwiches. Much like a restaurant gives the table a basket of bread, Flakowitz gives the table a basket of marble cake. My mom and I both ordered the same omelette, and had we known how enormous the omelette was we definitely could have shared one. An egg white omelette with spinach, mushrooms, onions and peppers was bigger than anything I have ever seen before. Even after cutting it in half, it was still too much to eat! It was delicious though, that’s for sure. Bubby and Rebecca both got eggs, and dad got the sable plate so he could make his favorite breakfast sandwich: an onion bagel with cream cheese, topped with sable, lettuce, tomato and onion. Even after devouring much of everything, there was still so much food left over for them to bring to the airport for later. Dad said the second sable sandwich, made from the leftovers, tasted even better three hours later before boarding the plane.

Now that I’ve experienced the well-known breakfast of Flakowitz, I have to go back soon to try their lunch specials. As we were getting ready to leave, diners were arriving for lunch so we got a chance to check out what some of the sandwiches look like. Needless to say, the size of the sandwiches were comparable to that of my omelette. My advice for those planning on a trip to Flakowitz: make sure you’ve got a big appetite!
